Abhyanga is a warm-oil massage treatment that soothes and relaxes both body and mind, balancing your dosha and encouraging restoration. Abhyanga is an ancient Ayurvedic massage treatment that is designed to ease the mind into relaxation, invite the nervous system to reset, and allow the body to heal. If you are seeking nourishment, revitalization, freedom from aches and pains, and to minimize stress, an Abhyanga massage at K.WEST will stimulate your lymphatic system for gentle detoxification.
What Is Abhyanga Massage?
Done with long, repetitive massage strokes, Abhyanga massage is designed to soothe the nervous system and quiet the mind. Through this gentle, consistent process, the body’s natural healing process begins to take over.
In Ayurveda, the lymph system must be stimulated first so healing can begin. The long, soothing strokes of Abhyanga massage detoxify the lymph system, improving immunity. The face and head are also massaged during this treatment.
Over 8 ounces of specially crafted warm oils are used for every massage, creating a bath-like treatment. The oil itself, and the healing and balancing properties it contains, is one of the most important aspects of Abhyanga massage. The oil is freshly and locally made with love by Aparna Khanolhar of Pure Ishvari, who hand-selects herbs in India to make her oils in the traditional Ayurvedic way.
Understanding Abhyanga Massage
An Abhyanga massage is carefully done with oils intended to balance the doshas, the forces that make up the physical body. For most people, one of the three doshas is dominant and establishes that person’s mind-body type. Constitutional imbalances in the doshas directly affect health, disease, and aging.
There are generally three types of doshas:
- Vata: The light, quick, airy type, prone to anxiety when imbalanced.
- Pitta: The athletic, fiery type, prone to anger or temper when hot or imbalanced.
- Kapha: The thick, slow, earthy type, prone to lethargy when imbalanced.
During Abhyanga massage, the oil saturates the skin and penetrates the tissues, relaxing the muscles, eliminating the need for deep-tissue massage. The Abhyanga massage is more effective at correcting bodily imbalances because it stimulates the body to heal itself, instead of overmanipulating or forcing the body, which can sometimes create resistance or inflammation.
Is Abhyanga Massage Right for You?
The skin is the largest organ in the body, and its performance is critical to overall wellness. A full-body oil massage nourishes the entire person, helps you heal, and promotes longevity. Abhyanga massage is sustenance for the body, mind, and soul. Regular treatments can deliver:
- Increased alertness
- Reduced fatigue
- Improved stamina
- Better, deeper sleep
- Calm nerves
- Lubricated joints
- Softer, smoother skin
Abhyanga massage is a time-tested ancient healing practice. At K.WEST, we pay careful attention to detail and maintain the integrity of the original practice in every treatment.
Prior to your massage, your practitioner will consult with you to determine your dosha and identify any imbalances you’re currently feeling to select the appropriate oil for your treatment. The herbs and specifically selected carrier oils are used to make oil blends that balance the three doshas.
You will also have the option to add on Udvartana Exfoliation treatment to further stimulate detoxification, or the Warm Sand Bolus treatment, targeted at arthritis and stiffness.
